Virginia Birkel, 91, of Arvada, Colorado, formerly of Port Charlotte, Florida, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 5, 2017 with her loving daughter by her side. Virginia was born in Southampton, LI, New York. Virginia was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Fawcett Hospital, receiving the Frist Humanitarian Award in 2004 for her untiring service during Hurricane Charley. She loved sports and was very involved with the Port Charlotte Shuffleboard Club, winning many awards. She also loved being on bowling leagues and playing cards. She missed many good, longtime friends in Florida. She is survived by her three children, Karl Birkel of Coffeyville, KS, Diane Birkel of Durham, NC, and Jenna Patterson of Wheat Ridge, CO. She was a loving grandmother to Noah, Sara, Matt and Chelsea and Great-Grandmother to Crystal, Zach, Kelly, Aubrey, and Jordan. She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Karl Birkel. Her loving, generous nature and beautiful smile will be missed by all. Celebration of Life 2:30 PM, Friday, January 13, 2017 in the Springwood Retirement Campus Activity Room.
