It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Ray Spaw who passed into eternal life on January 28, 2026, at the age of 58.
John was born on February 28,1967 in San Antonio, Texas to Carla Thomas and Jerry Spaw. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew him. His kindness, strength, humor, generosity and faith left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
John loved his country. After attending college at Central Michigan University, he honorably served in the US Army, a commitment he carried with pride throughout his life. He also served in the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department for over 20 years, serving his community with integrity, courage, and compassion.
John shared a deep loving bond with Dionne, and the two of them enjoyed traveling together (especially to Kauai) and making lifelong memories. He found joy in watching sports with his sons, particularly the Detroit Lions and the University of Michigan Wolverines. Family was the center of his life, and while he loved all those close to him, his granddaughters held a special place in his heart and were the light of his life.
John was a devoted Catholic and lived a Christ-centered life. His faith was evident in everything he did. He had a gift of generosity, whether through acts of service, words of encouragement, or simply being present when it mattered most. He helped others and asked for nothing in return. John knew how to make you feel special. He listened with his whole heart, offering a presence so genuine that he made you feel like you were the only person in the room.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dionne; children, Luke (Kalli), Jack (Alyssa), Liam; grandchildren Stella, Sophie, and Savannah; mother, Carla; and siblings Kim, Heather, Jeremy (Heather), and Jason (Kayleigh). He was preceded in death by his brother Kevin; and father, Jerry (Cindy).
There will be a rosary and vigil service for John at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Arvada Wednesday, February 4th at 6:30pm. The funeral will also be held at St. Joan of Arc on Thursday, February 5th at 10:30am with a reception immediately to follow.
He will be deeply missed, but his love and legacy will live on.
