Obituary

James (“Jim”) W. Toot of Colorado passed away on April 26, 2026, at the age of 70. He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. (“Jack”) Toot and Mary E. Toot. He is survived by his sister, Jane (Rick) Van Dresser, and his niece, Anna.

Jim grew up in Birmingham, Michigan, where he developed a lifelong love of hockey and photography. He graduated from Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, where he served as captain of the hockey team.

Jim attended both Fort Lewis College in Durango and University of Colorado Boulder. He became a securities broker specializing in small and start-up companies.

As a young man, Jim became an avid outdoorsman and mountaineer. He climbed peaks throughout Colorado, Washington, Canada, and Alaska, including summiting Mt. McKinley and Mt Rainier. During a climb of Bugaboo Spire, Jim and his climbing partners were trapped by a nine-day blizzard and ice storm and survived while sheltering in a cave.

Other adventures included bicycling up the west coast of California and spending a summer working aboard a tuna fishing boat in Alaska.
