Barbara Ann Sommerfeldt, 77, of Arvada, Colorado, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2025.
Born on May 31, 1947, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Barb was the first of five daughters welcomed by Milton (b. 1924, d. 1995) and Lorraine Grunwald (née Paasch, b. 1927, d. 2023). She was raised in the close-knit community of Black River, growing up playing in the woods and enjoying the beautiful nature all around her, and graduated from Sheboygan’s South High School in 1965. Following her calling to care for others, she attended Walther Memorial Nursing School in Chicago, where she earned her nursing degree in 1968.
On August 12, 1968, Barb married Richard (Dick) Sommerfeldt (b. 1944, d. 2000), in Sheboygan, and in 1982 they moved with their children David and Debra to Arvada, Colorado. Barb continued her dedicated career as a registered nurse, where her compassion and steady presence touched the lives of countless patients and colleagues over the years.
A loving mother, Barb is survived by her children, David (Kristen) Sommerfeldt and Debra (Paul) Dixon. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Elle and Maya Dixon, and Zachary, Nia, and Cai Sommerfeldt. Barb is also survived by her dear sisters: Susan (Randy) Charles, Betty (Tony) Torres, and Gail (John) Bernardi, along with many nieces and nephews who brought joy to her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her infant sister.
Barb had a warm and generous spirit. She found joy in the simple pleasures of crocheting and gardening and one of her greatest delights was creating beautiful crocheted dolls for the little girls in her life. Most of all, Barb cherished her church community at Peace Lutheran Church, which was a source of deep joy, friendship, and spiritual comfort throughout her life.
A memorial service will be held in the summer of 2025 at Peace Lutheran Church, 5675 Field Street, Arvada, CO 80002. The specific date will be announced closer to the time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Peace Lutheran Church in her honor.
